How Edward and Jackie Pike Built PetWellClinic Around Accessible Care for Fort Myers Pets

For Edward and Jackie Pike, PetWellClinic is more than a family business. It is the result of two careers, a lifelong connection to animals, and firsthand experience with a problem many Southwest Florida pet owners understand: when an animal needs care, getting an appointment can be difficult.

During his SWFL Spotlight interview at the MelloD Designs studio, Edward spoke about the path that brought their family to Fort Myers, the personal experiences that shaped the clinic, and the kind of environment they want to create for both pets and their owners.

At the center of the story is a straightforward goal: make veterinary care more accessible, convenient, and compassionate.

The People Behind PetWellClinic

Edward grew up near Lexington, Kentucky, and began his career working with specialty materials and superalloys. His work eventually took him to England, where he accepted an opportunity to manage a company his employer had acquired.

That move changed more than his career. While living in the United Kingdom, Edward met Jackie through a speed-dating event at a local establishment. What began as an unexpected introduction became a lasting partnership.

Jackie brought her own deeply service-oriented professional background to the relationship. She worked as a children’s nurse, including caring for children with HIV and immune deficiencies. Edward, meanwhile, developed extensive experience with dogs. He became a certified dog trainer, worked with high-drive German Shepherds, and volunteered with Domestic Animal Services for several years.

When Edward and Jackie began considering business opportunities, PetWellClinic brought those experiences together.

“The PetWell thing was kind of a mixture of our backgrounds, with me and the dog training and with her nursing,” Edward explained. “They kind of fit together.”

They explored several possible businesses, but their shared desire to help more animals kept guiding them back to veterinary care.

Deep Roots in Southwest Florida

Although Edward spent much of his life elsewhere, Southwest Florida was not unfamiliar territory. He began visiting the area in the late 1970s, when his grandfather lived at The Landings in Fort Myers. Edward remembers a much less developed Lee County, including a time when large portions of North Fort Myers were still open fields.

Those early experiences created a lasting connection to the region. After years in England, Edward and Jackie began thinking about another change. They were ready to leave the dreary weather behind, and Edward had always imagined eventually retiring in Southwest Florida.

Rather than waiting, the couple decided to make the move while they could build a life and business here.

“We figured, well, let’s just get this last move done now,” Edward said.

The move also gave Edward an opportunity to spend more time with their daughters while they were young. He stepped away from his career for several years to be present during that stage of their lives. Today, their daughters are growing up alongside the realities of entrepreneurship. They see the work, challenges, successes, and constant adjustments involved in operating a small business. For Edward, that family involvement is an important part of the experience.

Why They Built a Walk-In Veterinary Clinic

The idea behind PetWellClinic was shaped by a problem Edward experienced personally. One of his dogs was prone to medical issues. Even something as common as an ear infection could become stressful when local veterinary clinics were booked, especially during Southwest Florida’s busy season.

Pet owners were often left with two choices: wait for an appointment while the animal remained uncomfortable, or pay emergency veterinary prices for a condition that did not necessarily require emergency care.

“I love my dog to pieces,” Edward said. “I just don’t want her to be in extra pain.”

Edward saw a gap between traditional appointment-based clinics and emergency veterinary hospitals. PetWellClinic’s walk-in model offered a way to fill it. The Fort Myers clinic does not require appointments. During operating hours, pet owners can bring their dogs or cats in for many common health concerns without waiting several days or weeks for an available time slot.

Edward believes that accessibility is particularly important in Southwest Florida, where seasonal residents and visitors may not have an established relationship with a local veterinarian.

“If you come down here on vacation and something happens to your animal, where do I go? What do I do?” Edward said. “We’re the solution.”

A General-Practitioner Approach

Maintaining walk-in availability requires the clinic to remain focused on the types of care it can provide efficiently. PetWellClinic does not perform surgeries or euthanasia services. Surgical procedures can take longer than expected and would make it difficult to preserve the clinic’s walk-in model.

Instead, Edward describes PetWellClinic as functioning similarly to a general practitioner. The team can evaluate and treat many common conditions. When a pet needs surgery, advanced diagnostics, or specialized care, the clinic refers the owner to another veterinary practice.

The goal is not to replace every veterinary provider. It is to give pet owners a convenient first point of care and help them understand what their animal needs next. That role can be especially important when an owner does not realize how serious a condition has become.

Edward recalled situations in which people delayed seeking care because they were nervous, uncertain, or reluctant to visit a veterinarian. Once the animal was examined, the PetWellClinic team recognized that immediate specialty care was necessary and helped direct the owner appropriately.

“People don’t understand how serious something is until you’ve got a professional telling you, ‘You need to go now,’” he said.

A Nonjudgmental Place for Pet Owners

Edward understands that pet owners sometimes delay veterinary visits for complicated reasons. Cost, fear, uncertainty, and past experiences can all affect when someone decides to seek help. That is why he wants clients to feel comfortable walking into the clinic, regardless of how long they waited.

“We do our best to be completely nonjudgmental. There’s no judgment. We’re here to help.”

That philosophy extends to the clinic’s expectations for its staff. Because the business operates without appointments, employees do not always know what the day will bring. Some days are slow. Others become busy very quickly. Team members must be adaptable, attentive, and able to maintain strong customer service even when several clients arrive at once.

Edward said excellent customer service is one of his highest priorities. The staff must be prepared to keep pace with the veterinarian while remembering that every person entering the clinic is concerned about an animal they consider part of the family.

The Dogs That Shaped the Mission

Edward’s own dogs played a significant role in his decision to enter the veterinary field. He previously owned competition dogs trained in protection work. After moving to Southwest Florida, he also took in a working German Shepherd from a difficult situation. The dog had significant health concerns, and one veterinarian initially suggested Edward might have only a year with him. Years later, the dog remained active and happy.

Edward also adopted a Dogo Argentino, sometimes called an Argentinian Mastiff, after meeting her while volunteering at Domestic Animal Services. She had struggled in the shelter environment and required patience after being brought home. Edward and his family stayed committed to her.

“She had a lot of issues in the beginning, but we stuck with it,” he said.

One of their adopted dogs also helped demonstrate the importance of timely veterinary care. PetWellClinic’s veterinarian discovered that the dog had heartworm, a condition the family did not know about when they adopted her. Because it was detected early enough, they were able to begin treatment that Edward believes may have saved her life. That experience reinforced his message to Southwest Florida pet owners: preventive medications and routine care matter.

A Family Business, Built Side by Side

Owning a business as a married couple brings inevitable moments of stress, forgotten tasks, and competing priorities. For Edward and Jackie, however, the experience has also strengthened their relationship.

“It might sound corny, but my wife and I are closer than we were before,” Edward said.

He believes they have both grown through the process, while their daughters have gained a firsthand view of what it takes to create and operate a business. Entrepreneurship also has family roots for Edward. His grandfather owned rock quarries and worked in road resurfacing, giving Edward an early look at life as a business owner.

Edward had long wanted to build something of his own. He values being able to establish his priorities, make decisions, and accept responsibility for the results. That independence comes with a great deal of work, but he prefers it to building someone else’s vision.

Building PetWellClinic in Southwest Florida

Launching the Fort Myers clinic was not easy. Finding an appropriate facility was difficult, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Recruiting a veterinarian presented another significant challenge. Edward said those two critical pieces eventually began coming together at roughly the same time.

The veterinarian they hired brought more than a decade of experience and a strong commitment to animal care. Edward credits much of the clinic’s positive customer response to her work ethic and the example she sets for the veterinary assistants.

As the clinic has grown, Edward’s role has increasingly focused on helping more residents understand what PetWellClinic does and how its walk-in model differs from other veterinary practices. He sees Southwest Florida pet owners as deeply devoted to their animals. He also recognizes that the region presents specific concerns, including extreme heat, heartworm exposure, and other climate-related risks. Caring for animals here requires awareness of those conditions, particularly for people who recently moved to the region or visit seasonally.

What Customers May Not See

Behind the convenience of a walk-in clinic is a team prepared to respond to an unpredictable schedule. There is no advance appointment list showing exactly how many animals will arrive or what conditions the team will encounter. Employees must shift quickly between quiet periods and a full waiting area.

They also build relationships with clients during emotionally difficult situations. Veterinary medicine includes happy visits, but it also includes fear, illness, and conversations no pet owner wants to have. Edward takes pride in watching his staff support clients through both the positive and difficult moments. The greatest sign of trust, he said, is when someone returns.

“You’re trusting us with your baby. If you’re going to come and trust us with your baby three or four times or more, I think that’s fantastic.”

For Edward, those returning clients demonstrate that the clinic’s approach is working. People are not simply finding a convenient veterinary option. They are building relationships with the people caring for their animals.

A Vision Rooted in Community

Edward wants PetWellClinic to continue growing so the team can help more animals and pet owners. He is also interested in developing stronger relationships with local shelters and rescue organizations. His long-term ideas include supporting animal-focused charitable efforts and contributing to shelters that are frequently overwhelmed by the number of animals needing assistance.

He sees that compassion reflected throughout Southwest Florida. During seasonal months, people often bring found kittens or other animals into the clinic because they are concerned and want to help. For Edward, those moments reveal something meaningful about the community.

“We wanted to help more animals.”
