Sitting down inside the MelloD Designs studio for SWFL Spotlight, Matt Pasquel shared the story behind Better Than Yesterday Home Services, the experience that shaped his work, and the values that continue to guide him as a veteran, father, grandfather, and business owner in Southwest Florida.

The Person Behind the Inspection Report

Before Matt Pasquel talks about inspections, construction standards, or protecting a homeowner’s investment, he talks about family.

A father and now a grandfather, Matt describes his family as one of the greatest joys of his life. He moved to Florida as a teenager, met his wife just a few years later, and the two have now been together for 25 years. Along the way, life took them across the country through military service, parenthood, and eventually back to Southwest Florida, where family helped bring them home.

That personal foundation matters because it shows up in the way Matt talks about his work. He is not simply looking at houses. He is looking at the places where families will live, invest, grow, and build their next chapter.

From Military Service to Home Services

Matt spent 10 years in the military, serving as a generator mechanic and deploying for 12 months in Iraq. He describes that experience as eventful, difficult at times, and deeply formative.

The military taught him discipline, attention to detail, and awareness of his surroundings. Those qualities now carry directly into his work as a home inspector.

“When I’m walking through a home, I’m looking up and down, I’m scanning. Just always head on a swivel and looking for things.”

Matt Pasquel

That mindset is part of what makes his approach different. For Matt, inspection work is not about rushing through a checklist. It is about noticing what others may miss and being honest about what needs attention.

why he built better than yesterday

Why He Built Better Than Yesterday Home Services

After transitioning out of the military, Matt spent about nine years as a residential superintendent, working with larger builders in the area on production and custom homes. His role took him through the full building process, from dirt to handing the keys to the homeowner.

He handled scheduling, quality assurance, and every stage of the homebuilding process. That experience gave him a clear understanding of what right is supposed to look like.

It also showed him where things can go wrong.

Builders are busy. Crews are moving fast. Timelines are tight. Mistakes can happen, and sometimes small issues get missed before a homeowner moves in.

That is where Better Than Yesterday Home Services began.

Matt started the company to help homeowners protect their investment, identify small issues before they become bigger problems, and give people a better understanding of the home they are buying, selling, or maintaining.

“I didn’t just take a class. I actually do know what should be, what right looks like.”

Built on Experience, Not Just Certification

Better Than Yesterday Home Services offers a wide range of inspection services, including full home inspections, pre-sale and pre-listing inspections, wind mitigation, four-point inspections, thermal imaging, moisture intrusion inspections, roof certifications, pool and spa inspections, and repair verification.

But the service list is only part of the story.

Matt’s value comes from the years he spent inside the construction process. He knows how homes are built, where mistakes tend to happen, and how small oversights can turn into expensive problems if they are not caught early.

That perspective allows him to serve homeowners while also being fair to builders.

He does not see himself as someone coming in to create problems. He sees himself as another set of trained eyes.

“I want to make sure people are taken care of. I want to use some of my years of experience just to make sure people are protected.”

building in southwest florida

Building in Southwest Florida

Matt and his family have been in Southwest Florida for about 10 years. Like many people who build their lives and businesses here, family was part of what brought them to the area.

Since then, he has watched the region continue to grow. More people are moving in. More homes are being built. More families are making major investments in the area.

For someone in Matt’s field, that growth creates both opportunity and responsibility.

Southwest Florida’s fast-paced housing market can make inspection work even more important. When homes are being built, bought, and sold quickly, homeowners need someone who can slow the process down enough to look closely, ask the right questions, and identify issues before they become costly.

Matt wants Better Than Yesterday Home Services to become known as the trusted name people can call when they need that peace of mind.

“I want to be known as that go-to guy that people can trust.”

Matt Pasquel

His long-term vision is to keep expanding his education, add more services such as indoor air quality testing, sewer scope, and radon testing, and build a team rooted in the same values that guide him now: trust, integrity, and doing the job the right way.

what customers may not see

What Customers May Not See

One of the clearest examples Matt shared involved an inspection on a newer home nearing the end of its builder warranty.

From the ground, everything looked fine. But once Matt got onto the roof, he found an issue with the siding and soffit above the entryway. The area had not been fully finished, leaving part of the home open to moisture.

For nearly 11 months, that opening allowed moisture to get into the home and attic. Fortunately, the problem was caught before it caused larger damage, and because the home was still under warranty, the builder was able to address it.

That inspection reinforced exactly why Matt does this work.

A homeowner may never see an issue like that from the driveway. They may not know where to look or what signs matter. But those hidden details can make a major difference.

That is the trust Matt wants to earn with every inspection.

advice for homeowners choosing an inspector

Advice for Homeowners Choosing an Inspector

When asked what homeowners should look for in a home inspector, Matt’s answer was straightforward: experience matters.

He cautions homeowners not to choose based on price alone. While there are many good inspectors in the market, he believes people should look for someone who has real construction knowledge and understands what they are seeing inside a home.

“You don’t always want to just look at price. You get what you pay for.”

Matt Pasquel

For Matt, a good inspection is not about creating fear. It is about clarity. It helps homeowners understand what is happening, what matters, and what should be addressed before a small problem becomes a larger one.

Continuing to Grow as a Veteran Entrepreneur

Matt and Lloyd Duhon also connected through the Florida Gulf Coast University Growth Program for Veterans, an experience Matt described as valuable in his journey as a new business owner.

While he already had hands-on construction knowledge, Matt said the business side brought a different learning curve. The program helped him better understand the ins and outs of running a company, while also connecting him with other veterans building businesses of their own.

His advice to other veterans thinking about entrepreneurship is honest and practical: learn as much as you can, but keep going.

“I jumped in head first. I did a lot of things out of order, but it’s a learning experience.”

Then he added something many veterans will recognize:

“You adapt and overcome. You make it happen. Don’t give up.”

Why an inspector’s eye for detail matters in Southwest Florida.

Conversations like this reveal something important about Southwest Florida’s business community. Many of the companies serving this region are being built by people whose values were shaped long before they opened their doors.

For Matt Pasquel, Better Than Yesterday Home Services is more than an inspection company. It is an extension of his military discipline, construction experience, family focus, and desire to protect people from avoidable problems.

In a region that continues to grow, those values matter.

They matter when a family is buying a home. They matter when a homeowner is nearing the end of a builder warranty. They matter when someone needs a professional who knows what right looks like and is willing to say what needs to be said.

That is the story behind Better Than Yesterday Home Services: a veteran-owned business built on trust, experience, and the belief that every day is an opportunity to do better than yesterday.
