Sitting down inside the MelloD Designs studio, Captain Christopher “Chris” Rodriguez shared the story behind Premio Marine, the Southwest Florida business he built from a lifelong love of boating, fishing, and helping people feel more confident on the water.

For Chris, boats have never been just a hobby. They have been part of his life since childhood, shaping his work, his family life, and the way he serves customers today.

from miami lakes to a life on the water

From the Shoreline to the Captain’s Seat

Chris grew up in Miami on Lake Mahar, also known as the airport lakes. In the 1990s, the area was known for peacock bass tournaments, and Chris remembers seeing bass boats come through on weekends.

At first, he was fishing from shore. But by around 13, he had his first jon boat.

He mowed lawns, helped family, and found a way to get on the water. From there, the water became a constant part of his life.

By his mid-teens, Chris was regularly spending time on a head boat, also called a party boat, in Miami. One day, the mate did not show up, and the captain asked Chris to help. That opportunity turned into a job, and that job eventually led him deeper into the marine world.

He later moved into larger yacht work in Miami, including time around the yacht world near downtown Miami. From there, he spent years working on boats, private yachts, and vessels in different places, including the Caribbean, the Northeast, and the Florida coast.

Even when he tried other kinds of work, including construction, property management, and landscaping, he kept returning to boats.

“I just can’t stay away.”

Chris Rodriguez

That pull toward the water became the foundation for Premio Marine.

the person behind the business

The Person Behind Premio Marine

When asked who he is, Chris described himself as a typical Florida guy who grew up catching snakes, gators, and fish.

That background matters because his business is not something he came to casually. It grew out of years of being on the water, learning different vessels, seeing what boat owners deal with, and understanding how much work goes into keeping a boat ready.

Chris has worked on large vessels and smaller boats. He shared that he has captained vessels up to 130 feet, guided locally after moving back to Florida, and owned boats himself.

That mix of experience gives him a practical understanding of how different boats require different kinds of care. A larger vessel and a smaller boat may not have the same needs, but both still require attention, labor, maintenance, and consistency.

Chris also spoke about the importance of family and support. He credited the people close to him for standing behind him, even when his ideas may have seemed ambitious or unexpected.

That support matters, because building a business in the marine industry is not simple. It takes trust, availability, practical knowledge, and a willingness to take responsibility for someone else’s investment.

For Chris, Premio Marine is not just about boats. It is about helping people enjoy the life they wanted when they bought one.

why he built premio marine

Why He Built Premio Marine

The idea behind Premio Marine is simple: boat ownership should feel enjoyable, not overwhelming.

Chris saw a gap between full-scale yacht-level service and the everyday boat owner who still needed reliable care, maintenance, and guidance. His goal was to bring that white-glove yacht management mindset to boat owners across Southwest Florida.

His approach centers on peace of mind.

Boat owners know the reality. After a day on the water, guests often head home while the owner is left sunburned, tired, and holding the hose. The boat still needs to be washed. Systems need to be checked. Strainers may need cleaning. Engines need flushing. Lines need to be secured. If the owner is seasonal or away for the summer, storm prep and routine inspections become even more important.

Premio Marine exists to take that pressure off the owner.

Chris offers yacht and boat management, maintenance oversight, captain services, and hands-on training. The goal is not just to keep a boat clean. The goal is to keep it ready.

“You bought it. Enjoy it.”

Chris Rodriguez

price versus cost

Price Versus Cost

One of the ideas Chris returned to during the conversation was the difference between price and cost.

Preventative maintenance may feel like an added expense upfront, but neglect often costs more in the long run. A sitting boat can create problems. A boat left unattended during the summer can become vulnerable to storms, system failures, lift issues, dead batteries, or avoidable wear.

Chris believes owners are better served when someone is regularly checking the vessel, coordinating maintenance, documenting conditions, and making sure small issues do not become major expenses.

That mindset is part of what makes Premio Marine different. It is not just a cleaning service. It is a management and care service built around prevention, preparedness, and trust.

teaching confidence on the water

Teaching Confidence on the Water

Premio Marine also helps boat owners become more confident operators.

Chris offers captain services and training, but his preferred approach is hands-on for the owner and hands-off for him. He can demonstrate, explain, and guide, but he wants the owner to physically practice the skills.

That matters because boating requires confidence.

Docking, navigating, reading conditions, handling wind and current, and understanding what the boat is doing all become easier when the owner is calm and prepared. Chris can stand beside a client, observe what they are doing, and help them make adjustments in real time.

He wants clients to feel capable when he is not there.

“Boating is all about confidence.”

Chris Rodriguez

That philosophy also extends into fishing. Chris believes there is more to catching fish than buying the most expensive lure or gear. Wind, current, pressure changes, moon phases, and local knowledge all matter. When he works with clients, he wants them to understand the water, not just follow instructions.

building in southwest florida

Building in Southwest Florida

Although Chris grew up in Miami and spent time living in Vermont, Southwest Florida became home.

After living up north, he realized how much he missed the water. The boating season was too short, and he often traveled to Massachusetts or upstate New York just to fish and get back near the water.

When he and his family returned to Florida, they knew they did not want to settle back in Miami. They looked south, considered Naples, and eventually landed in the Fort Myers area.

Southwest Florida made sense, especially for someone whose life and work are tied to boating. The Caloosahatchee River, local marinas, barrier islands, offshore access, and the region’s strong boating culture all create demand for services like Premio Marine.

But building here has also come with challenges.

Chris spoke about the impact Hurricane Ian had on local boating infrastructure. In parts of the region, marinas and slips became harder to find. For boat owners, that shortage creates stress. For marine businesses, it creates new obstacles.

Still, Chris sees the demand. People continue to move to Southwest Florida for the lifestyle, and boating remains a major part of that lifestyle. His business is built to support that community by helping owners protect their vessels and spend more time enjoying them.

“If you’re on the water, it’s an adventure.
It’s a good day.”

Chris Rodriguez

what customers may not see

What Customers May Not See

A lot of what Premio Marine does happens before the owner ever steps on board.

Customers may see the clean boat, the ready vessel, and the easy departure. What they may not see are the checks, maintenance coordination, storm concerns, system monitoring, line inspections, and follow-up that make that easy day possible.

They may not see someone making sure the boat is still tied properly, still sitting correctly on the lift, still being run when needed, and still ready after weeks or months away.

That behind-the-scenes work is where trust is built.

Chris knows what it feels like to own a boat. He knows the excitement, but he also knows the responsibility. His job is to reduce the headaches so the owner can focus on why they bought the boat in the first place.

The service is practical, but the value is emotional. It is the difference between wondering if the boat is okay and knowing someone qualified has eyes on it.

Why stories like this matter in Southwest Florida.

Conversations like this reveal something important about Southwest Florida’s business community. Many of the businesses shaping this region are not being built from a distance. They are being built by people with lived experience, personal investment, and a real understanding of the community they serve.

Chris Rodriguez did not build Premio Marine because boating looked like a good market opportunity on paper. He built it because boating has been part of his life since childhood. He knows the joy of being on the water, the work that comes after the ride, and the confidence owners need to truly enjoy their investment.

That kind of business story matters in Southwest Florida. It is local. It is relationship-driven. It is built around trust.

For Premio Marine, the promise is clear: boat owners should be able to show up, step aboard, and enjoy the water with peace of mind.
